Katsaros Distillery - Ouzo & Tsipouro Tirnavos
Tirnavos distillery is the one with the longest tradition. In 1856, Nikolaos Katsaros -the founder of the distillery- founded Ouzo, which was later recognized as Greece’s national drink.
Katsaros Family requested and secured the authorization to produce and sell the new product, which was perceived in commerce and especially to Marseilles, France, as the finest quality extract.
Tirnavos is the area with the largest vineyards in its region. The producers traditionally had income not only from the wine, but also from Tsipouro (or "Raki") -the ancestor of Ouzo- a traditional Greek drink which history dates back to ancient and middle-age years.
Tsipouro is a product of exceptional quality, as it is produced with the double distillation method, mainly from the variety of grapes called "moschato" (which means "the one that has outstanding fragrance") a variety very renowned in Thessaly, central Greece. The secret blend of seeds and herbs gives in Tsipouro Tirnavos its dinstict taste and characteristic aroma.
